Jack the Bike Man
Jack the Bike Man, a Florida-based bicycle charity, is our main partner. Its goal is to strengthen communities and "to provide education, guidance and training to at-risk children (...) through bicycle programs."
Jack's charity started off as a hobby, as he helped fix bikes for kids and migrant workers he knew and gave them old bikes he salvaged and repaired. As time went on, though, he realized his hobby was having a very positive impact on his community: when he donated bikes to kids and workers, he helped them get to school and work on time; when he fixed their brakes, gears and tires, he created a safer neighborhood. Because of hard work and community trust, Jack's bike hobby grew to a charity, then to a fully-fledged bike shop that repaired and donated hundreds of bikes to kids who needed them. The shop had one more important community impact; it became a place where children came to hang out, fix bikes, and give them to their friends. Without a place to stay and work after school, many of them would have fallen prey to local gangs.
